The chart above shows the kilometers of rail per square kilometer of land in EU states.  Four states (Luxembourg, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Germany) are far above their peers in railway coverage.  Germany is especially impressive considering the large size of the state.

The chart above shows the miles of rail per square mile of land in US states.  It's surprising to see that Western states have so little rail compared to the size of their area as rail has been romantically associated with the frontier lands.

The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every EU and US region.  The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the region.  For instance, the Eastern EU has nearly 10 times more kilometers of road for every kilometer of rail.  Not surprisingly, all US regions have high road to rail ratios while only one EU region rivals them: the Southern EU.

The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every US region.  The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the region.  For instance, the West has 31 more miles of road for every mile of rail.  All regions of the US have a pretty similar road to rail ratio that lies somewhere around 30:1 (the figures in the chart are rounded to the nearest whole number).

The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every EU region.  The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the region.  For instance, the Southern EU has 31 more kilometers of road for every kilometer of rail.  All regions of the EU save for the Southern EU have a road network that is less than 20 times larger than their rail network.

The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every EU and US state.  The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the state.  For instance, the Netherlands has 48 more miles of road for every mile of rail.  Only two states have a road network that is 50 times larger than their rail network and they are both located in the Northeastern US.

The chart above shows the ratio of the road network to the rail network in every US state.  The larger the ratio, the more prevalent roads are over rail in the state.  For instance, Rhode Island has 318 more miles of road for every mile of rail.  Rhode Island is the only state with such a high ratio as every other state has a ratio of 60:1 or less.
