EU Regions by Population Density

Feb 16, 2018
Chart of EU regional population density

The chart above shows the population density of EU regions.  The Western EU is the most densely populated while the Northern EU is the most sparsely populated.

Findings

  • The difference between the most densely populated region, the Western EU, and the least, the Northern EU, is 159 (chart is rounded to nearest whole number) people per square kilometer.
  • The Western EU is seven times more densely populated than the Northern EU.
  • The Western EU is 1.48 times more densely populated than the Southern EU which is 1.31 times more densely populated than the Eastern EU which is 3.84 times more densely populated than the Northern EU.
  • The sum of the Southern and Eastern EU's population density surpass the Western EU's population density.

Caveats

  • Area data is from 2007.
  • Population data is from 2011.
  • The area includes both land and water area.
  • Population and area data are from different sources.
  • The Western EU consists of Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
  • The Southern EU consists of Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, and Malta.
  • The Eastern EU consists of Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
  • The Northern EU consists of Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.

Details

The Northern EU includes large chunks of land that are uninhabited and coupled with the fact that the population is small to begin with one can see why its population density is so low.

The EU's population density is 116 persons per square kilometer.  The Southern EU has a population density that is most reflective of the EU as a whole.
